Itinerary The 3-Day Desert Trip from Fes to Merzouga

Day 1: Fes – Middle Atlas – Merzouga Desert – Camel Trek & Desert Night

Your 3-Day Desert Trip from Fes to Merzouga begins with a departure from Fes, heading south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine charm and clean environment.

Continue to Azrou, where you’ll walk through vast cedar forests home to Barbary macaques. The journey then proceeds through scenic mountain landscapes to Midelt, a peaceful town where you’ll pause before continuing.

As you travel further, the scenery gradually shifts while crossing mountain passes and following the impressive Ziz Gorge, offering sweeping views over valleys and rocky plateaus. Passing through Errachidia, the landscape begins to take on a more desert-like character.

Drive through the lush Ziz Valley, stopping at panoramic viewpoints overlooking palm-filled oases and traditional villages. Continue via Erfoud and Rissani before arriving in Merzouga in the late afternoon.

Here, enjoy a warm welcome with mint tea before setting off on a camel trek across the dunes at sunset. Upon arrival at the desert camp, dinner is served, followed by an unforgettable night beneath the stars.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Nomadic Encounters – Tissardmin Oasis – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi

Start your day early with the option to watch the sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, continue your 3-Day Desert Trip from Fes to Merzouga with a full day of desert exploration.

Travel around the impressive Erg Chebbi dunes, known for their towering heights and ever-changing shapes. Follow old desert routes once used in rally events, crossing landscapes where golden sand meets rocky plains.

Visit the Tissardmin oasis, known for its fossil-rich surroundings, before heading into remote areas where nomadic families still live. This is a unique opportunity to learn about their traditions and daily life.

Later, stop at a panoramic viewpoint to admire the vast desert scenery before continuing to Khamlia village. Here, enjoy traditional tea while listening to live Gnawa music performed by local musicians with deep African roots.

In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to explore the dunes or relax before dinner and another overnight stay in Merzouga.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Ziz Valley – Cedar Forests – Fes

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Fes, traveling through the expansive palm groves of the Tafilalet region, one of the largest oasis systems in the world.

Continue along the Ziz Valley, where the river supports long stretches of greenery and agriculture. Stop at a scenic viewpoint to take in the beauty of the valley and surrounding villages.

Pass through Midelt once again, where you’ll have time for lunch and a short break. In the afternoon, cross the cedar forests near Azrou, with chances to spot Barbary macaques along the way.

Make a final stop in Ifrane, known for its organized layout, green spaces, and European-inspired architecture. Afterward, continue to Fes, arriving in the early evening and marking the end of your desert adventure.
