Itinerary The 3-Day Desert Trip from Fes to Merzouga

Day 1: Fes – Middle Atlas – Merzouga Desert – Camel Trek & Desert Night

Your desert journey begins with a departure from Fes, traveling south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco” thanks to its alpine-style architecture and peaceful atmosphere.

Continue to Azrou and walk through the famous cedar forests, home to Barbary macaques living freely among the trees. The route then leads through scenic mountain landscapes toward Midelt, where you will stop for a short break.

As the journey continues, the scenery gradually transforms while crossing mountain passes and following the dramatic Ziz Gorge, offering spectacular views of valleys and rocky desert terrain. Pass through Errachidia before arriving at the lush Ziz Valley, filled with palm groves and traditional villages.

Travel through Erfoud and Rissani before reaching Merzouga in the late afternoon. Enjoy a traditional welcome with mint tea before beginning a camel trek across the golden dunes during sunset. Arrive at the desert camp for dinner and an unforgettable night beneath the stars.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Nomadic Encounters – Tissardmin Oasis – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi

Wake up early for the chance to witness a beautiful Sahara sunrise. After breakfast, spend the day exploring the fascinating landscapes around Erg Chebbi, famous for its towering golden dunes and changing desert scenery.

Follow old desert tracks once used during rally races, crossing landscapes where rocky plains meet endless sand dunes. Visit the Tissardmin oasis, known for its fossil-rich environment, before heading into remote desert areas inhabited by nomadic families. This offers a unique opportunity to discover their lifestyle and traditions.

Later, stop at panoramic viewpoints overlooking the vast desert before continuing to Khamlia village. Enjoy traditional tea while listening to live Gnawa music performed by local musicians with African heritage.

In the afternoon, enjoy free time to walk through the dunes, relax, or experience the peaceful atmosphere of the Sahara before dinner and another overnight stay in Merzouga.

Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Ziz Valley – Cedar Forests – Fes

After breakfast, begin the journey back to Fes through the impressive palm groves of the Tafilalet region, one of the world’s largest oasis networks.

Continue along the scenic Ziz Valley, where the river creates long stretches of greenery and fertile land. Stop at panoramic viewpoints to admire the contrast between palm groves, villages, and surrounding mountains.

Pass through Midelt once more for lunch and a short rest before crossing the cedar forests near Azrou, where Barbary macaques are often seen along the roadside.

Make a final stop in Ifrane, known for its clean streets, green parks, and European-inspired charm, before continuing to Fes. Arrive in the early evening, marking the end of your memorable Sahara desert adventure.
