3-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Adventure

About this trip

Three days. Two imperial cities. And in between, just about everything Morocco does best.

This private journey from Marrakech to Fes is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the country’s extraordinary range — crossing mountain passes, wandering through ancient kasbahs, descending into dramatic gorges, and eventually arriving at the edge of the Sahara, where a camel trek and a night under the desert stars await. Then, rather than retracing the route, the journey continues north through cedar forests, alpine towns, and the rolling Middle Atlas before delivering you into the ancient heart of Fes.

Throughout, you’ll travel at your own pace with a dedicated private driver-guide — no groups, no fixed timetables, and no compromises. Just Morocco, done properly.

Trip Highlights:

Scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains with panoramic viewpoints
Cross the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass
Camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
Overnight stay in a traditional Sahara desert camp with live Berber music
Sunrise over the dunes followed by a journey through the Middle Atlas Mountains
Stop at the alpine-style town of Ifrane before arriving in Fes
Visit cedar forests in Azrou and spot wild Barbary monkeys

Itinerary The 3-Day Marrakech to Fes

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

An early start from Marrakech, and the city falls away quickly as the road begins its climb into the High Atlas. The landscape up here is bold and beautiful — jagged peaks, deep-cut valleys, and Berber villages perched on hillsides that seem to defy gravity. There’s plenty of opportunity to stop, stretch, and take in the kind of panoramic views that justify the early alarm.

The day’s first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, and it doesn’t disappoint. This UNESCO-listed fortified ksar is one of Morocco’s most iconic sites — a labyrinth of earthen towers and ancient alleyways that has appeared in more films and television productions than almost anywhere else on earth, and yet somehow still manages to feel timeless and genuinely moving when you’re standing inside it. Time here for a proper explore and a relaxed lunch before moving on.

The afternoon takes you through the Valley of Roses — softly beautiful, scattered with kasbahs and seasonal blooms — before the road opens up into the Dades Valley. A traditional Moroccan dinner, comfortable accommodation, and the vast quiet of the surrounding landscape make for a deeply satisfying end to a day that has already covered an enormous amount of ground.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, the morning heads toward Todra Gorge — and few places in Morocco prepare you for quite what you find here. The cliffs rise nearly 300 meters on either side of a narrow canyon floor, through which a clear, cold river winds its way past palm trees and scattered vegetation. Walking through it, you feel genuinely small in the best possible sense. The light changes constantly depending on the time of day, and the whole place has a drama and serenity that’s hard to shake.

From Todra, the road pushes south through a landscape that grows steadily more arid — desert towns, ancient irrigation channels, and occasional oases appearing along the way like reminders that life finds a way even here. By mid-afternoon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to rise on the horizon, and the sight of them never gets old no matter how many times you’ve been told to expect it.

Your camel is waiting at the edge of the sands. The trek out into the dunes as the sun descends is one of those experiences that photographs can gesture toward but never fully capture — the silence, the scale, the way the light transforms the sand through a dozen shades of gold before finally letting go of the day. Camp welcomes you with warmth, a traditional Moroccan spread, and the sound of Berber music drifting out across the desert. The stars, when you finally look up, are extraordinary.

Day 3: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Middle Atlas – Fes

Nobody willingly sleeps through a Sahara sunrise, and once you’ve seen one, you’ll understand why. The dunes shift through color and shadow as the first light arrives — quiet, cinematic, and completely worth the early wake-up. Breakfast in the desert, a last look at the sands, and then the journey north begins.

The route out of the Sahara follows the Ziz Valley — a long, lush corridor of palm groves that threads its way through the arid landscape like a green river, offering one of Morocco’s most quietly beautiful stretches of road. As the valley gives way to the Middle Atlas, the scenery shifts again: the air cools, the vegetation thickens, and suddenly you’re in cedar forest. Azrou is the place to slow down and keep your eyes on the tree line — Barbary macaques move freely through the branches here, and spotting them feels like a genuine wildlife encounter rather than a tourist attraction.

Then comes Ifrane — one of Morocco’s more surprising towns, with its steep-roofed European-style architecture and immaculate streets earning it the nickname “Moroccan Switzerland.” It’s a wonderfully odd contrast to the desert you woke up in this morning, and a pleasant place for a final stop before the road leads you into Fes.

By late afternoon, the ancient city receives you — its medieval medina, its tanneries, its thousand-year-old streets already waiting to become the next chapter of your Moroccan adventure.
